Sintali’s clients who have achieved EDGE Certification marked their achievements in an EDGE Certificate Handover ceremony in São Paolo and Salvador last month. Organised by IFC, the ceremony marked the celebration of the first 100 EDGE certified projects in Brazil, showing progress towards a greener future in the region. Representatives from SGS attended the event on behalf of Sintali to show support for their achievements.
EDGE, an innovation of IFC, is a cloud-based platform that makes it easy to design and certify resource-efficient and zero carbon buildings around the world. To qualify for certification, a building must achieve at least a 20 percent reduction in energy, water, and embodied carbon in materials compared to a local baseline, which is unique for each country around the world and based on local building regulations and climactic conditions.
38 companies from across the region were in attendance to receive their certificates, showing the standards growing presence in the region. As of February 2024, there were 97 EDGE certified projects in Brazil with a total floorspace of over 1.6 million of m2. The residential sector is seeing further growth with more than 7,500 certified green homes. With 49 projects currently in the pipeline to be certified in the next months, with more than 700,000 m2 of floorspace, EDGE is growing rapidly and with that supporting greener construction practises in the region.
Sintali too has increased its presence in the region, with over 300,000 square meters of floor space certified across the country. Yearly, these certified projects will save over 197,000 m3 of water and over 10,000 MWh of energy, equating to almost 2000 tons of CO2 saved per year. With buildings across a range of typologies, including residential developments, retail developments and warehouses, these projects mark progress towards Sintali’s continuing growth in Brazil.
In Brazil, it is estimated that the construction sector accounts for one-third of the country’s total emissions. With the construction sector in the region at a size of $120.5 billion, it is vital that whilst the market grows Brazil continues to adopt and prioritise green building practices. EDGE provides a unique solution to this market because it enables companies to develop green buildings at scale, something which will be essential given the nature of the growth in the country. Brazil also faces a shortage of more than 6 million homes. EDGE can further provide an opportunity for the development of more green, affordable housing, which will be vital to help the region achieve full economic growth potential.
Sintali expresses our congratulations to all organisations that are driving this change and adoption of green building practices, but wants to give a particular congratulations to their clients: Direcional Engenharia S.A., Emergent Cold, GTIS Partners, IRR Capital, Obramax, and Decathlon, all of whom were in attendance to receive their EDGE certificates.
About EDGE
EDGE (“Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies”), an innovation of IFC, makes it easy to design and certify resource-efficient and Zero Carbon buildings around the world. IFC created EDGE to respond to the need for a measurable and credible solution to prove the business case for building green and to unlock financial investment. EDGE operates through a cloud-based platform that has a sophisticated set of city-based climate and cost data, consumption patterns, and algorithms for predicting the most accurate performance results. It is a measurable way for builders to optimize their designs to improve their building’s resource efficiency and to estimate the added cost of building green and the predicted utility savings. EDGE is available for new and existing buildings, including offices, homes, hotels, schools, light industry, warehouses, and data centers. To qualify for certification, a building must achieve at least a 20 percent reduction in energy, water, and embodied energy in materials compared to a conventional building.
